Subtitling is a form of audiovisual translation used in TV series, movies, video games and all kinds of videos (interviews, speeches, etc.). It is the preferred type of translation in many countries—including Greece—while other countries employ dubbing or voice-over. On the one hand, subtitling is significantly cheaper than other methods. On the other hand, it is subject to spatio-temporal constraints that make it a special kind of translation that entails numerous techniques (adaptation, borrowing, compensation, reformulation, etc.). In other words, what we see on our screen is not the verbatim translation of speakers’ words, but rather their meaning. Despite the widespread perception that it is a simple and easy process which can be carried out by anyone, subtitling is a very demanding and time-consuming type of translation.
